Penang is surprisingly affordable!

The great advantage of retiring in Penang is not just the fascinating tropical lifestyle, it’s the cost advantages of living in Malaysia.

You can purchase a spacious, well-appointed apartment in Penang for around half the cost of a similar property in a major Australian city.

Living expenses are also around half what you’d expect. For as little as $A800 a month, a couple can live comfortably in Penang at the equivalent lifestyle of retirement in Australia. Or you can choose the lifestyle of surprising luxury for around A$2,300 per month.

Nearly everything, from buying new clothes, to playing a round of golf, to a romantic dinner for two is surprisingly affordable.

But the best part is how Penang effortlessly blends its costs advantages with all that is great about Asia into a vibrant, modern city.

It’s the Lifestyle!

Penang is unique. Gorgeous beaches, picturesque golf courses, palm trees and beautiful turquoise coloured water are just the start.

From the Penang Botanical Gardens to the Fuan Wong Art Garden and the lush tropical forests, Penang is a nature lovers wonderland.

The city offers amazing shopping at western-style malls as well as antique shops and hawker stalls crammed into jostling George Town – a UNESCO world heritage site.

Then there’s the food – Penang sizzles with Asia’s finest culinary delights!

It’s just a few short hours’ drive to Thailand, the Cameron Highlands and Langkawi, so get set to explore and indulge your lust for travel. Or you can stay in Penang and discover everything South East Asia’s most exciting city has to offer.

Why retire abroad?

Relying on an Age Pension can make keeping up with all those bills quite difficult. So what are your retirement options?

Stay in the home. The positives are you don’t incur any moving expenses and stay in an area you know. But many retirees find themselves asset rich, income and lifestyle poor.

Downsize. Moving to an apartment closer to town or a house in the outer suburbs, incurs a lot of expenses (stamp duty, price of real estate etc.) which eat up a sizeable chunk of your savings.

Retire Abroad. Living abroad in retirement is a great way to open the door to new experiences and most Australians will still receive their Age Pension. You can enjoy an equivalent lifestyle much more affordably in a new, intriguing part of the world.

Healthcare in Penang

Malaysia has some of the best healthcare and medical facilities in Asia.

Its hospitals are known for their excellence in every facet of surgery and therapeutic treatment. Indeed, Malaysia is one of the fastest growing destinations for ‘medical tourism’ in the world.

That’s why International Living Magazine ranked Malaysia ‘Best Country in the World for Healthcare’ for 4 of the last 5 years.

You can feel confident should the need arise you’ll get the very best care at world class hospitals and clinics.

Penang also has world-class dental care, orthodontics and dentures. Indeed, it’s surprisingly affordable given these specialists trained in the same universities as Australian dentists or their equivalent in Malaysia. As a rule of thumb, expect to pay around a third of the cost for dental care as you would in Australia.

Australians can take out health insurance (premiums average around $38 – $50 per month) or just pay out of pocket for their care.

Penang Property

The Market

Most retirees will want to own their own place and the market in Penang has many similarities with Australia’s.

Over the longer term, Penang property tends to perform well, growing at a rate somewhere between Sydney and Brisbane’s; a reasonable, sustainable pace.
